About this event

Conway Scenic Railroad runs Santa's Holiday Special from North Conway Station in New Hampshire's White Mountains region. The operator describes a classic daylight, weekend on-train excursion down the Conway Branch aboard heritage railcars, lasting about an hour to an hour and a half, that embraces a classic train ride decorated for the season. It says Santa and his elves may even make guest appearances on board for young travelers.

Three classes are sold. Coach is in restored early- to mid-20th-century railcars, with heating and openable windows but no air conditioning. Comfort Class and the Observation Dome are fully equipped with both air conditioning and heating. The railroad's FAQ names this excursion, along with its Snow Train, as especially popular with young travelers in winter.

What to expect

A 60 to 80 minute heritage-railcar ride down the Conway Branch, with the train decorated for the season. The operator says Santa and his elves "may even" make guest appearances on board. Passengers choose Coach, Comfort Class or Observation Dome seating.

Practical info

Boards at North Conway Station, 38 Norcross Circle, North Conway, New Hampshire. The operator advises advance-purchase ticket holders to check its website to confirm boarding times at least 24 hours before departure, and online tickets must be collected at North Conway before boarding. Reservations are not strictly required but trains frequently sell out. Non-alcoholic beverages may be brought aboard; outside food and alcohol are not permitted. Because of the historic railcars the trains are not fully ADA compliant, but a mobile lift (400 pound combined weight limit) is available to assist boarding. Reservations can be cancelled up to 72 hours before boarding for a rebooking credit. Phone: 603-356-5251.
