About this event

THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride Edinburgh departs from Edinburgh Waverley Station, with its check-in point on Platform 2. The event site says it is licensed by Rail Events International and is operated and managed by Holdham Events Limited, part of Holdham Rail Solutions Group. The operator says it plans to travel along the line from Edinburgh Waverley, using Mark 3 carriages chosen for their comfort and accessibility and diesel locomotives to maximise reliability.

The operator describes a magical re-creation of the classic children's story led by a cast on board a real train: golden tickets for the Conductor, hot chocolate and a sweet treat served by dancing chefs, a reading of the book by Chris Van Allsburg, Santa boarding to present the first gift of Christmas, and caroling on the way back to the station.

Standard Class has a limited number of table seats for four, with most seating in airline-style pairs. First Class guarantees a table seat, has fewer guests per carriage and adds an exclusive souvenir mug. Because the event runs on the mainline with Network Rail, the operator warns that times can change by up to an hour either way and asks guests to plan any onward travel carefully.

What to expect

About one hour on board, and 1.5 to 2 hours at the event in total; the operator warns that delays before departure or on board can lengthen this, so allow extra time before catching a train home. Guests are encouraged to wear pyjamas and a dressing gown, with sturdy closed-toe shoes and no slippers. Bags may be searched at the entrance.

Practical info

Departs from Edinburgh Waverley Station, EH1 3EG, with check-in on Platform 2. Timings are strict because the train runs on the mainline: doors are locked at set cut-offs and cannot be reopened for latecomers. Large bags, rucksacks, suitcases and pushchairs are not allowed on board, and car seats cannot be taken on either. The trains include dedicated wheelchair spaces with companion seating and an accessible toilet; the operator has an accessibility page. Only registered assistance dogs are allowed. The operator says it cannot offer alternative cookies or dairy-free substitutes for the hot chocolate, and asks guests with allergies to contact it. Tickets are sold online only, not by phone or at the station. There are public car parks and transport links near and inside the station.
