About this event

The Száncsengő Expressz ("Sleigh-bell Express") Eger is a one-day heritage excursion run by MÁV Nosztalgia (brand MRT). The operator announces a steam-hauled nostalgia train: Santa calls on the legendary No. 424 steam locomotive instead of his hoofed friends. The train leaves Budapest-Nyugati in the morning, runs via Gödöllő and Hatvan to Eger, and returns in the late afternoon.

On board, a vintage buffet car is open throughout and the programme is explained over the public-address system. Passengers choose among first-class and second-class cushioned compartment cars and third-class wooden-bench cars. In Eger the operator offers an optional guided "Baroque Advent" walk (Archbishop's Palace, its cellars with a tasting of Eger wine and molnárkalács for adults, a small Advent fair), followed by free time at Eger's Advent market.

For children there is an optional, limited-number "Exclusive meeting with Santa": Santa joins the train at Eger before it departs and travels in a separate carriage, where each child can receive a gift pack and a photo opportunity.

What to expect

A full-day return excursion behind a steam locomotive: out to Eger in the morning, home in the evening. The vintage buffet car stays open. Optional extras: a guided Baroque Advent walk in Eger and, for children, a meeting with Santa in his own carriage with a gift pack and a photo. Free time at the Advent market in Eger. The operator asks passengers to be back at the Eger station at least 15 minutes before departure, since the timetable cannot be delayed.

Practical info

Boards at Budapest-Nyugati (stops also at Rákosrendező, Újpalota, Gödöllő, Hatvan, Füzesabony; the operator advises arriving at the station early to see the locomotive). The train stops at Egervár for the guided walk, and returns from Eger station (not Egervár). Children 4 to 14 pay the child fare; under 4 travel free without a seat. The Santa meeting must be bought together with the train ticket and is limited in number. The timetable is marked as a draft ("tervezet"). On-board services per class are listed on the trip page, and the operator sends a passenger information letter in the week of the trip. Tickets are bought through the operator's own site.
