Christkindlzug — Murtalbahn Dampfzug (Steiermarkbahn)

The Murtalbahn is the local public railway of the Murau region and, in the words of its operator Steiermarkbahn, is recognisable above all for its historic steam train. On a distance of more than 37 km along the Mur between Murau in Styria and Tamsweg in Salzburg, the 760 mm narrow-gauge line offers regular steam excursions.

The Christkindlzug is a separate themed trip on Christmas Eve. The operator describes it as a winter steam train ride from Murau to Stadl an der Mur and back, with a visit from the Christkind during the journey creating the Christmas mood.

The operator prices its themed trips separately from the regular steam trains, and no discounts apply to them. Because the number of seats is limited, tickets must be booked or reserved in advance.

The train leaves from Murau station, where the operator's travel agency sells tickets. The number of seats is limited, so booking or reservation in advance is necessary: the online ticket shop accepts credit cards only; the travel agency at Murau station (+43 676 840 011 116, murtalbahn@steiermarkbahn.at) sells tickets for cash, subject to availability. Themed trips have their own price structure with no discounts. Under the operator's conditions, dogs need a ticket bought on the train for cash and must be on a lead and wear a muzzle.
