Palena — Casello 42, Transiberiana d'Italia

The Sulmona–Isernia railway crosses the Abruzzo and Molise mountains between the two towns that give it its name. Ordinary traffic ended in 2011, and the line has since been kept alive as a heritage route, its dramatic winter scenery earning it the nickname "Transiberiana d'Italia" among the seasonal tourist trains that now run it. Palena's halt, opened in 1897 and today owned by RFI, sits at 1,260 m — one of the line's high mountain stops.

The camera itself is mounted at "Casello 42," a former trackman's cabin beside the halt, run by the enthusiast network Webcam straordinarie d'Abruzzo, which also operates a weather station recording conditions at the same site. The stream has run continuously since 17 December 2024.
