The operator places them at milepost 565.4, on the west slope of Sherman Hill — the climb that has defined operations on this line since the transcontinental railroad was built. Traffic is heavy Union Pacific freight: intermodal, manifest, coal and grain. The depot platform is visible in the live stream, but no passenger train has called since 1997, when Amtrak's Pioneer was discontinued. The building now serves as a museum, and the operator links its visiting page directly. A pan-tilt-zoom camera carries the public chat; a fixed east-facing camera is reserved for Virtual Railfan members.
What to watch for
Sherman Hill is the point — this is the west slope, so westbound trains are running downgrade off the summit and eastbounds are working towards it. Coal and grain out of Wyoming share the line with intermodal and manifest. The empty depot platform in frame is its own kind of history: the Pioneer stopped here until 1997, and nothing has since. The operator publishes a Laramie symbol list, which turns the passing freights into identifiable trains.
