The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway opened in 1898 and closed in 1935. The operator describes what stands at Woody Bay today in plain terms: "what you can see today at Woody Bay is just the beginning of an exciting project to rebuild one of the world's most famous and picturesque narrow-gauge railways; the legendary Lynton & Barnstaple Railway". Woody Bay is the highest station in southern England and the base of the rebuilt line, which currently runs a mile to Killington Lane. What to watch for
Two-foot-gauge steam on Exmoor: the railway's small tank engines running round in the loop, and the station's Victorian buildings, restored from the original. The narrow gauge means the trains are close to the camera and slow — a rare chance to watch the couplings and the point work rather than a blur.
