Before you go — access is not guaranteed
Photo positions show where photographers have stood, not places we have visited. Some may be on private or railway property. Stay on public land and never cross fences, tracks or “No Trespassing” signs: being on railroad property is illegal and dangerous. Parking and restrooms come from official and map sources.

Seasons
Visit Grand County recommends Trough Road from July through October and advises checking the road's condition before setting out. Colorado's official tourism site says to avoid the gravel stretch after snow or rain. Trough Road is on Grand County's "Trough Route" for snow plowing, which also covers Hartman Gulch, Blacktail Road and Radium Road; it is still a high gravel road and winter storms can make it treacherous, as the January 2024 local-traffic-only closure showed.
The nearby BLM facilities are seasonal. Pumphouse Recreation Area is open April 1 to November 30 and closed from December 1 to March 31 with no services, and the BLM page lists potable water as available May to October but unreliable. Radium Recreation Area follows the same April-to-November fee season. Off Trough Road, BLM closes Inspiration Point Flats Road, north of County Road 1, to motorized travel from December 15 to April 15; the main county road is not part of that closure.
Summer brings rafting traffic on the river and long daylight for the westward and canyon views. Autumn gives clear, dry air and the most stable road conditions. Winter light is low and from the south, which leaves much of the canyon floor in shadow for most of the day.
Safety
Stay on the pull-off. The ground falls away steeply from the road toward the river and the railroad, approximately 174 m (570 ft) below. Do not climb down toward the track and never walk on or along it: the BLM's Upper Colorado River guide warns river users to "avoid the railroad tracks; do not walk along them" and says crossing or walking on the railroad right-of-way is unsafe. The track is Union Pacific property.
Trough Road is a mountain road with hairpin turns and long gravel stretches. Colorado's official tourism site advises that the stretch between Kremmling and State Bridge "is gravel and lacks services; avoid travel after snow or rain and fill your gas tank before you go". Park fully off the travelled lane and watch for traffic coming around the bends when you step out of your vehicle.
The area is remote. Sky-Hi News quoted Grand County officials in January 2024 saying there is "very limited cell phone service on the road"; plan as if you will have no signal, and tell someone your route. In winter storms the county can restrict the road: on January 15, 2024 the Grand County Sheriff's Office closed County Road 1/Trough Road to all but local traffic because of treacherous conditions, reopening it later that day. For current conditions call 511 or check COtrip.org, as the same article advised.
Carry water, sun protection and warm layers: the pull-off sits at approximately 2,356 m (7,730 ft), where sun is strong and weather changes quickly. There are no services or toilets at the pull-off itself; the nearest vault toilets are at the BLM Pumphouse Recreation Site when it is open.

What runs here
The track below belongs to Union Pacific's Moffat Tunnel Subdivision, the former Denver & Salt Lake (Moffat Road) main line across the Rockies. Wikipedia's Central Corridor article states the line is "primarily used by freight trains, including those of UP, BNSF (who has trackage rights over the entire line)".
Freight has declined. The Colorado Sun reported on May 5, 2025 that "as coal production in northwestern Colorado is fading out, freight trains through the Moffat Tunnel have dropped to about six per day, down from 30." That figure is for the tunnel, on the same line east of here, not a count taken in Gore Canyon. Colorado Newsline reported in May 2024 that Union Pacific was looking to replace lost coal-train traffic as the coal-fired power plants in Craig and Hayden shut down; those coal trains reach this line at Bond, west of Gore Canyon. Expect long gaps between freights and do not plan around a schedule.
Passenger service is Amtrak's California Zephyr, which Colorado Newsline describes as "daily, long-distance" between Chicago and the San Francisco Bay Area and which crosses Gore Canyon once in each direction per day. Check Amtrak's current timetable and live train status before driving out, because a late train can shift the passing time by hours. Amtrak's seasonal Winter Park Express, which Colorado Newsline describes as a ski train between Denver and the city-owned ski area, is not a Gore Canyon train.
Colorado and Union Pacific have agreed terms for the state to run up to three daily round-trip passenger trains on Union Pacific's mountain line (Colorado Sun, 2025); whether and when such trains will run through Gore Canyon is not established by any source read for this record.

Bearings below are computed from the pull-off coordinates against the OpenStreetMap track geometry.
West-southwest view down the valley (bearing approximately 250 to 285 degrees): the track runs along the north bank toward Pumphouse, between approximately 0.7 and 2 km (0.4 to 1.2 mi) away. This is the direction from which eastbound trains approach. In the morning the sun is behind you (east), which front-lights the train; from mid-afternoon on it swings toward the west and the view becomes backlit.
North-northwest view into the canyon mouth (bearing approximately 310 to 345 degrees): the nearest rail is 450 m (1,480 ft) away at bearing 311 degrees and the short tunnel at the mouth about 550 m (1,800 ft) away at bearing 338 degrees. The line here is built on the north side of the canyon, facing south, so it takes sun from late morning through early afternoon. On summer evenings the setting sun (northwest at this latitude of 40 degrees north) shines almost straight into this view.
Because you stand about 174 m (570 ft) above the rail, a moderate telephoto (roughly 100 to 300 mm on full frame) isolates a train against the river, while a normal lens places it in the whole canyon mouth. A westbound leaving the canyon and an eastbound entering it both show the river below the train, the effect WaltersRail describes. Deep in the canyon the walls cast shade early and late in the day; midday gives the most light on the canyon floor in winter, when the sun stays low to the south.
Stay on the pull-off. One published caption from this overlook (ActionRoad) notes the photographer went "down the hill a bit from the road"; the slope below the road drops steeply toward the river and railroad and is not a place to scramble for a better angle.

Trainspotting Experience
Inspiration Point is the turn-out on Trough Road (Grand County Road 1) where the road climbs onto the south rim at the western mouth of Gore Canyon. Gore Canyon itself has no road: Wikipedia describes it as "roadless and inaccessible by most traffic, except for the Union Pacific Railroad's Moffat Tunnel Subdivision and whitewater boats", and notes that part of it can be seen from Trough Road along its southern rim. This pull-off is where that view is closest.
The coordinates are those of the pull-off mapped in OpenStreetMap beside the road. From there the nearest track lies approximately 450 m (1,480 ft) to the northwest and about 174 m (570 ft) below you (USGS elevation service: 2,356 m / 7,730 ft at the pull-off, 2,183 m / 7,162 ft at the rail). A short tunnel on the line sits at the canyon mouth approximately 550 m (1,800 ft) to the north-northwest. The WaltersRail railfan blog says that from Inspiration Point one can view eastbound trains "for several miles" and that shots of westbounds exiting the canyon are "spectacular, in part because the river is hundreds of feet below"; it adds that photographs "can be taken almost without leaving your vehicle". A Trough Road overlook video (Roger Deschner) shows the eastbound California Zephyr passing through a short tunnel and entering the canyon.
This is a waiting spot, not a busy main line. Freight traffic on the Moffat line has fallen sharply with the decline of coal from northwestern Colorado, so bring patience, food and water, and watch the river below in summer for rafts leaving the canyon toward the BLM Pumphouse Recreation Site 2.3 km (1.4 mi) to the southwest. For a closer, river-level angle, the BLM Gore Canyon Trail starts at Pumphouse Launch 1 (day-use fee) and follows the south bank upriver to the canyon mouth, where its end is approximately 115 m (380 ft) from the track across the river.
Landscape, Setting & Local Atmosphere
Gore Canyon is a short, deep gorge cut by the Colorado River through the northern end of the Gore Range southwest of Kremmling. Wikipedia gives it as approximately 4.8 km (3 mi) long with walls rising approximately 300 m (1,000 ft) on either side, and the BLM's Upper Colorado River guide says the river drops 68 feet per mile (about 13 m per km) for three miles through it, in rock the guide describes as Precambrian gneiss, schist and granite nearly 1,800 million years old. Visit Grand County calls it a 3-mile isolated canyon with class V rapids.
Inspiration Point sits where this gorge opens out. Looking north-northwest you see the canyon mouth and the railroad clinging to the canyon side above the river; looking west and southwest the valley widens toward Pumphouse, and the track follows the river's north bank. Trough Road around the pull-off is paved for about 2 km (1.2 mi) according to OpenStreetMap, with gravel on either side; Visit Grand County describes the whole road as 24.4 miles of partly paved, hard-packed dirt with hairpin turns, climbing between 7,000 and 8,329 feet (2,134 to 2,539 m).
The land around the pull-off is administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM national surface management layer). There are no houses, shops or services here; the nearest town is Kremmling, approximately 10.6 km (6.6 mi) away in a straight line.
Historical or Cultural Relevance
Gore Canyon was contested ground at the start of the 20th century. The BLM's Upper Colorado River guide recounts that two power companies and the Bureau of Reclamation wanted to dam the canyon, a project that would have covered 20,000 acres and flooded Kremmling, while David Moffat was surveying it for a railroad. From 1903 there were camps on both sides of the river at the mouth of the canyon, power plant workers on river left and railroad workers on river right, until President Theodore Roosevelt decided that a railroad would go through. In 1906 the railroad survey began by anchoring ropes and logs in the canyon to make bridges, and the BLM guide gives September 1907 as the date the railroad was completed through the canyon; the line then ended at McCoy.
The Moffat Road became the Denver & Salt Lake Railway. According to Wikipedia, it reached Steamboat Springs in the winter of 1909 and Craig in 1913. The 6.2-mile (10.0 km) Moffat Tunnel under the Continental Divide was holed through on July 7, 1927 and formally turned over to the railroad lessee on February 26, 1928 (Wikipedia), and the Dotsero Cutoff between the Moffat line and the Denver & Rio Grande Western at Dotsero, completed in 1934, finally gave Denver a direct rail line to Salt Lake City. The Denver & Salt Lake was fully absorbed into the Rio Grande in 1947; the Rio Grande was taken over by Southern Pacific in 1988, and Southern Pacific by Union Pacific in 1996.
The canyon itself is named after Sir St. George Gore, an Irish baronet who hunted big game across the region between 1855 and 1857 with Jim Bridger as one of his guides (BLM guide). The first recorded attempt to navigate the canyon by boat, by Captain Samuel Adams in 1869, ended with both boats smashed on the rocks.
What Makes This Spot Different
Gore Canyon has no road through it, so the railroad and whitewater boats are the only ways to travel its length. Inspiration Point is the one place identified in the sources read for this record where a driver can look down on the Moffat line at the canyon mouth from a public road, without paying a fee and without hiking. The river-level alternatives nearby, the BLM Pumphouse and Radium recreation sites, are fee areas.
The height is the defining feature. At approximately 174 m (570 ft) above the rail and 450 m (1,480 ft) from it, a train reads as a small moving line against the Colorado River and the canyon walls rather than as a close-up subject. It is also where the California Zephyr can be photographed each day in a canyon that its passengers otherwise see only from the train.
The river adds a second layer of activity. The BLM guide calls the three miles through Gore Canyon the most challenging commercially rafted stretch of river in Colorado, and Visit Grand County mentions the annual Gore Fest races held in August; in summer, rafts and kayaks emerging from the canyon can share the frame with a train.
Frequently Asked Questions
QCan you drive into Gore Canyon to see the trains?
No. Gore Canyon has no road; only the Union Pacific railroad and whitewater boats pass through it. Trough Road (Grand County Road 1) runs along the south rim, and Inspiration Point is the turn-out where it overlooks the canyon's western mouth and the railroad below.
QHow far is Inspiration Point from the tracks?
Approximately 450 m (1,480 ft) horizontally from the nearest rail and about 174 m (570 ft) above it, measured from the pull-off coordinates against OpenStreetMap track geometry and the USGS elevation service. A short tunnel at the canyon mouth is about 550 m (1,800 ft) to the north-northwest.
QHow many trains pass through Gore Canyon?
No count is published for the canyon itself. The Colorado Sun reported in May 2025 that freight trains through the Moffat Tunnel, on the same line, have dropped to about six per day from 30 as coal traffic fades. Amtrak's California Zephyr passes once in each direction daily.
QIs Trough Road open all year?
Trough Road is plowed by Grand County as part of its Trough Route, but it is a high, largely gravel road. Colorado's tourism site advises avoiding it after snow or rain, and the county restricted it to local traffic during a January 2024 storm. Visit Grand County recommends it from July through October.
QIs there a closer view at river level?
Yes. The BLM Gore Canyon Trail starts at Launch 1 of the Pumphouse Recreation Site and follows the south bank upriver to the canyon mouth, across the river from the track. Pumphouse is a BLM fee site ($5 day use) open April 1 to November 30.
