About this event

The Brecon Mountain Railway runs THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride from Pant Station, near Merthyr Tydfil. The operator calls it a steam-powered adventure through Bannau Brycheiniog (the Brecon Beacons) and describes a theatrical re-creation of the film.

Guests receive a souvenir golden ticket on arrival and see pre-train performances. The operator describes about 45 minutes of train ride and a 30-minute stop at "The North Pole", where stewards perform the hot chocolate dance, passengers are served hot chocolate and a cookie by chefs and waiters, and Santa and the elves present each guest with the first gift of Christmas, a sleigh bell. The classic story is read aloud on board, with stewards showing a large-format picture book so everyone can follow, and carols are sung on the way back towards Pant Station. Characters include the Conductor, the Hobo and Santa Claus.

The operator says the train ride is 2.5 miles each way, not the full length of the line, and the whole experience lasts about 120 minutes. A premium upgrade adds a limited-edition ceramic mug and a bag. A professional photo opportunity is set up at Pant Station.

What to expect

A 120-minute experience made of a pre-ride performance, a train ride of about 45 minutes and a 30-minute stop at the North Pole, with the story read aloud, hot chocolate and a cookie, carols and Santa's first gift of Christmas. The operator encourages pyjamas, with sturdy closed-toe shoes rather than slippers, and warns that the carriages are not heated. It suggests arriving about 30 minutes before your booked start time.
