About this event

The Gwili Railway's Festive Lights of the Valley Train is a vintage steam train adorned with sparkling neon lights as it steams through South West Wales. The operator describes a magical, photo-friendly journey with lots of opportunities for photographs and social media posts, run at two departure times on each date to give a cosy, social evening outing.

Passengers are welcomed on arrival with sherry and a mince pie before the trip, and children receive a juice. The operator lists the trip at 1.5 hours and says all ages are welcome. Trains leave from Abergwili Junction station, the railway's new station in Carmarthen; the railway's line runs from there to Danycoed Halt and back, about 90 minutes for the complete journey according to the operator.

There are two ways to travel: open seating, arranged in tables of four where couples may share on busy days, or a private 1950s-style compartment with a large picture window for up to four or six people depending on class. The operator's booking page also lists full bar service on board, with real ales, lagers, ciders, wines, spirits and soft drinks.

What to expect

A 1.5-hour evening ride on a vintage steam train lit with colourful neon and decorative lights, a sherry and mince-pie welcome on arrival and a juice for children. Open seating or a private compartment. The operator lists a full bar service on board.

Practical info

Departs from Abergwili Junction station, Abergwili, Carmarthen SA31 2DG, where all of the railway's journeys now start. The station is currently reachable only by road, so anyone coming by public transport needs a taxi from central Carmarthen. From the A40, turn at the roundabout signed A485/Steam Railway and the car park is on the left after 100 yards. The operator asks passengers to arrive no less than 30 minutes before the booked departure and says advance booking is advisable because seats sell out quickly. Open seating is in tables of four; compartments cover up to four or six people depending on class. The operator asks you to contact it before booking about accessibility: the carriages have narrow doors and corridors, and a portable slope is carried for wheelchair users to board through the guard's van.
