About this event

Colne Valley Railway is a heritage steam and diesel railway in Essex, near Castle Hedingham, Sible Hedingham and Halstead, with a miniature railway, a model railway, a museum and a public signal box on the same site. Its Santa Express is a pre-booked Christmas event: families ride a train through the Essex countryside to meet Santa in his grotto.

The operator says the train is not a steam train but a vintage Bubble Car, with comfortable seats, heating and what it calls a driver's-eye view. The line is decorated with a light display, and the operator says passengers may spot Santa loading up the next train of presents.

After the ride an elf welcomes each family outside Santa's grotto, then there is time to chat with Santa and take photographs. Every child then goes to the workshop to choose a gift and write a letter to Santa, and the operator says there is a present for the dog too. Visitors can also make reindeer food and stay on site as long as they like, with the model railway, museum and signal box open and a buffet car serving hot chocolate, mince pies and mulled wine.

What to expect

A train ride along the line to Santa's grotto, a chat and photographs with Santa, a gift chosen by each child in the workshop and a letter to Santa written with an elf. Tickets also cover the rest of the day on site, including more train rides, and the operator says everything on the Santa side of the visit is indoors. The operator suggests something Christmassy to wear and warm clothes and sensible shoes if it is cold and wet.

Practical info

Departs from Platform 1 at Castle Hedingham Station, Yeldham Road, Castle Hedingham, Essex CO9 3DZ. Booking in advance is compulsory: Santa cannot be met without a pre-booked ticket. Tickets cover access to the site for the rest of the day, train rides, time with Santa and the workshop with the elves. Children under three can meet Santa and do not pay the full price. Free on-site parking is described as fully accessible, with space for about 150 cars; the site is described as pushchair friendly, with toilets, baby change and a cafe. Dogs are welcome and need no seat reservation, but should not be on the seats.
