About this event
The Diósgyőri Mikulásvonat ("Diósgyőr Santa Train") is a decorated little train that, in the run-up to Christmas, takes families from Miskolc to a "Mesebirodalom" (Fairy-tale Kingdom) at Lillafüred, in the heart of the Bükk mountains. The operator describes cheerful krampuses and "carefree fun" on the Santa train as it rattles through the winter forest.
At the Fairy-tale Kingdom the programme consists of children's shows, a "light forest" and a meeting with Santa. The operator lists two popular fairy-tale performances, a "platform party" with well-known storybook characters, a meeting with Santa and a light forest of several hundred thousand bulbs. It adds that the performances take place in covered, heated venues, while some parts of the programme can be outdoors.
The event is organised by the Diósgyőrért public-benefit foundation. The train runs as a special train and can be used only with a ticket bought for the event; ordinary railway tickets and concession cards are not valid. Every ticket-holder has a numbered seat. Visitors can also buy a show-only ticket and make their own way to Lillafüred, and a separate Santa package for children can be bought with the entry ticket.
What to expect
Round-trip ride on a decorated narrow-gauge train between Miskolc and Lillafüred, a children's show, a platform party with storybook characters, a light forest and a meeting with Santa. The whole programme, train ride included, takes about 170 minutes. Seats are numbered and standing is not allowed; the train cannot wait for latecomers. Dress warmly: shows are indoors in heated venues but parts of the programme can be outdoors.
Practical info
The train leaves from, and returns to, the LÁEV Dorottya utca terminus, Dorottya utca 1, Miskolc. The operator asks guests to arrive at least 15 to 20 minutes before departure and to allow even more time for the late-afternoon and early-evening trains. Parking near the terminus is free but limited; the operator suggests parking one or two tram stops away. Show-only guests go straight to Lillafüred, where winter parking is free but not reserved for the event. Children aged 0 to 2 take part free if they sit on a lap without their own seat; a children's Santa package is an optional extra bought separately (children with food allergies are asked to bring their own). Strollers: limited number, small and foldable only. Tickets are bound to the chosen day and time and are not generally refundable (a refund is possible for certified illness); a change of time is possible up to five days before, subject to availability. The event runs in rain and snow. Toilets and a parent-and-baby room are on site at the Fairy-tale Kingdom.
