About this event

Each December the Norwegian Railway Museum (Norsk jernbanemuseum) in Hamar runs its Stålvogntoget, a preserved train of steel coaches, to the Christmas market in Røros, a World Heritage town.

The train leaves Hamar station in the morning, picks up passengers at Elverum and Koppang, and runs through the Østerdalen valley to Røros. Passengers then have several hours in the town before the evening return to Hamar. The museum describes market stalls with local food and crafts, mulled wine and Christmas baking, horse and sleigh, torches and Christmas songs in the historic streets.

The Stålvogntoget is the museum's own running train. It was assembled in 2012–2013 from B3 and B5 generation coaches withdrawn from the Nordland Line, together with a bistro car, and it is hauled by an electric or diesel locomotive. The museum's first open public trip with it was to the Rørosmartnan fair in 2014, and it has carried passengers to the Røros Christmas market in December in several seasons since.

What to expect

A full-day return trip: the train reaches Røros in the early afternoon and leaves again in the evening, giving a few hours at the Christmas market and in the old town. On board, the bistro car serves coffee and freshly made waffles. The museum states that departure and arrival times are approximate.
