About This Experience

Kolejkowo is the largest model railway in Poland, occupying more than 900 square metres (about 9,700 sq ft) on the first floor of the Sky Tower, one of the tallest buildings in the country, at ul. Powstańców Śląskich 95 in Wrocław. Built at roughly 1:25 scale, the layout is a miniature recreation of Wrocław and the wider Lower Silesia (Dolny Śląsk) region, where model trains run continuously through a landscape populated by more than 5,000 hand-finished figures of people and animals.

The exhibition faithfully reproduces real Lower Silesian landmarks: the historic townhouses of Wrocław's Market Square, the Świebodzki railway station (built in 1842 and in service until 1991), the flying-saucer-shaped meteorological observatory on Śnieżka — the highest peak of the Karkonosze (Giant Mountains) — and the wooden Szwajcarka hunting lodge of 1823 in the Rudawy Janowickie. Alongside the accurate miniatures the builders hide humour and fantasy, from a Polish take on Mount Rushmore (the "Mount of Presidents") to Superman in the city centre.

Kolejkowo moved into the Sky Tower in July 2021, several times larger than its original home at the city's Świebodzki Station, and the operator (Kolejkowo S.A.) now runs sister exhibitions in Gliwice, Warsaw and Jelenia Góra. It is open 365 days a year.

Photo Opportunities

Photography is a main draw for many visitors. The day-and-night cycle is the shot to plan for: stay through at least one full cycle and photograph the same scene lit and dark, as the night phase — with illuminated windows, lamps and train lights — is the most atmospheric. The recreated Wrocław Market Square, the Świebodzki station scene and the Śnieżka observatory are the most recognisable set pieces. Bring a camera that copes well in low light for the night phase, and note that the periodic storm sequence over the miniature adds dramatic lighting. Tripods are impractical in the visitor flow, so a steady hand or a fast lens helps.

Why Visit

For railfans, Kolejkowo is less a museum than a living diorama: model trains haul passenger and freight rakes around the clock at a deliberately slow scale speed so visitors can study every wagon as it passes. The layout is engineered as much as modelled — vehicles on the roads move under their own power and stop at junctions, and a genuine weather system plays out overhead, with a thunderstorm complete with real falling rain breaking over the miniature every few minutes.

The signature effect is the accelerated day-and-night cycle: a nine-minute "day" is followed by a four-minute "night", when thousands of tiny street lamps, shop windows and locomotive lights switch on across the whole model. It rewards a slow, repeated look — the same scene reads completely differently after dark, and hidden vignettes (a construction-site farce, fleeing thieves, a reunion of lovers) reveal themselves the longer you watch.

What to Expect

A typical visit lasts about an hour and a half, though there is no time limit until closing and modellers often stay longer. The exhibition is fully indoor, climate-controlled and pram-accessible, with low viewing platforms so small children can see over the layout edge; QR-code descriptions along the route are available in Polish, English, German, Ukrainian, Czech and Spanish.

It is a family-oriented attraction rather than a quiet gallery — expect children delighting in the moving trams and cars while adults hunt for the thousands of small human dramas staged among the buildings. Weekday mornings just after the 10:00 opening are the calmest; weekends, Polish public holidays and school breaks are the busiest, and buying a timed ticket online in advance both lowers the price and guarantees entry.

Best Time to Visit

Arrive at the 10:00 opening on a weekday to have the layout largely to yourself; Saturdays and Sundays run later, until 19:00. Book a timed ticket online a few days ahead for the lowest dynamic price and a guaranteed entry slot.

Frequently Asked Questions

QHow long does a visit to Kolejkowo take?

Most visitors spend about 1.5 hours exploring the layout. There is no time limit until closing, so modellers and families often stay longer.

QHow much do tickets cost?

Kolejkowo uses dynamic online pricing: normal tickets start from 39 zł online (from 55 zł at the box office) and reduced tickets from 33 zł online (from 45 zł at the box office). Children under 3 enter free. Buying online in advance is cheaper and reserves a timed entry.

QWhat is the day-and-night cycle?

QIs the exhibition wheelchair accessible?

Yes, Kolejkowo is on the first floor of the Sky Tower and is accessible to visitors using wheelchairs.
