Eisenbahnwelten im Kurort Rathen

The Eisenbahnwelten im Kurort Rathen is an open-air garden railway laid out in the Oberrathen district of Rathen, on the left bank of the Elbe in the Saxon Switzerland National Park region, roughly 40 kilometres (25 miles) south-east of Dresden. The site sits directly beside Kurort Rathen station on the Dresden–Decin main line, and the real railway runs immediately behind the layout — a rare arrangement where full-size electric and freight traffic passes within earshot of the models it inspired.

The layout was conceived by Lothar Hanisch, who from early 2005 bought a derelict three-sided Saxon farmstead (Dreiseitenhof) and the surrounding land with the intention of converting it into a garden railway exhibition with a small guesthouse. After two years of construction the Eisenbahnwelten opened in 2007; German Wikipedia records the investment at 1.9 million euros up to 2013. The Saxon Steam Railway Route notes that creating the scenery required moving some 1,500 tonnes of soil and over 50 tonnes of sandstone.

The subject is deliberately local: the Eisenbahnwelten reproduces the railway landscape of the Upper Elbe between Decin in Bohemia and Meissen, built around a double-track main line with seven branch lines and models of 28 stations from the region. Modelled subjects include Moritzburg Castle, Decin Castle, Weesenstein Castle, Burg Stolpen, the Neumannmuehle in the Kirnitzsch valley and a miniature of the Karl May festival stage at the Felsenbuehne Rathen, alongside motifs from the Weisseritztalbahn, the Sebnitztalbahn, the Mueglitztalbahn, the Loessnitzdackel and the Zittau narrow-gauge lines. Since 2015 a model Matterhorn, reported at a little over five metres tall, and a stretch of Rhaetian Railway with the Landwasser Viaduct have extended the layout beyond Saxony.

The defining shot at Rathen is the double subject: a G-scale train on the layout with the Bastei sandstone massif rising across the Elbe behind it, or a model station in the foreground with the real Dresden–Decin main line running immediately behind the site. The operator publishes its own photographs framed this way, and the Euroregion Elbe/Labe illustrates its listing with an image of the model Pirna station backed by the genuine Elbtalbahn.

Because everything is outdoors and unglazed there is no reflection problem, but the light is entirely natural: early morning and late afternoon give raking light across the terraced scenery, while midday sun on a clear day produces hard shadows in the rock cuttings. The model Matterhorn and the Landwasser Viaduct section added in 2015 are the tallest features on the site and photograph well against sky.

The paths rise gently through the layout, which gives elevated angles down onto the lower levels — useful for showing the multi-level arrangement that a ground-level shot flattens out. Confirm current photography and drone rules with staff on arrival; the operator publishes no photography policy online.

This is a G-scale (Spur G) garden railway at 1:25, not an indoor exhibition — the trains run outdoors through real rock, real water and real weather, and the whole layout is controlled digitally by PC using the LGB MZS III system. The operator states the site covers over 7,000 square metres with about 5,200 metres of track and 90 turnouts, worked by up to 40 trains at once; German Wikipedia and the Euroregion Elbe/Labe give 7,350 square metres, roughly 4.6 kilometres of track, 88 turnouts and 285 buildings, with 35 trains in continuous operation. Either way it is one of the largest publicly accessible G-scale layouts anywhere.

The operator advertises the Eisenbahnwelten as the world's largest garden railway, and it was widely regarded as the largest G-scale exhibition layout when it opened in 2007. German Wikipedia notes that since 2020 the record for the largest G-scale and largest model railway layout overall has been held by the Modellbauwelten in Bispingen, Lower Saxony — a distinction worth knowing before you arrive expecting a current world record.

For modellers the technical interest is concrete: the site is a dealer for Maerklin, PIKO and Bachmann, those manufacturers test new models on the layout, and private owners can arrange in advance by e-mail to run their own stock on it as a test track. A working display workshop (Schauwerkstatt) lets visitors see the computer-controlled interlockings that keep 30-plus trains apart.

The layout occupies the garden of a converted Saxon farmstead, so the visit is a walk on made paths through terraced scenery rather than a circuit of glass cases. Around 300 model buildings, most of them built in-house, and roughly 350 metres of modelled streams and rivers fill the ground between the running lines; the trains climb through height differences of more than four metres. The site is described by both the operator and the Saxon tourism board as barrier-free throughout, with paved, rollable paths on gently rising ground.

Trains run continuously through the day, and the operator asks visitors to arrive well before the 17:00 last admission because after that the stock is gradually worked back into the indoor depots and the running-down begins. Heavy rain and storms can reduce operation, and opening hours can change at short notice for weather — this is an outdoor attraction first.

On site there is a restaurant serving Saxon cooking with 37 seats indoors and 45 outside, and a guesthouse (six double rooms, one family room, two holiday flats) whose guests get free admission to the layout. Dogs are allowed on the layout only on a lead or carried, and are not permitted in the guesthouse. There is an e-bike charging station at the entrance.
