Mini World Lyon

Mini World Lyon occupies more than 3,000 square metres (32,000 sq ft) of indoor space at the far end of the Carre de Soie leisure and retail complex in Vaulx-en-Velin, a commune of the Metropole de Lyon, between the Boulanger store and the Carrefour supermarket. It opened on 30 June 2016 after four years of development. Founder and director Richard Richarte has said the idea began with a single model house built at home with his daughter; searching online for miniature models led him to Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg, which he visited a week later and which became the explicit template for the Lyon project. The park's own construction workshop, Mini World Atelier, states it used the same fabrication processes as the Hamburg layout while developing its own control systems for the animations, the day/night cycle, the Festival of Lights sequence and the movement of trains and road vehicles.

The entire layout is built to HO scale, 1:87, the most widely used gauge standard in model railroading. According to figures published by Mini World Atelier, the park contains 70,000 miniature inhabitants, 4,000 vehicles, 5,000 animals, 20,000 trees, 150 trains running on 3 kilometres (1.9 miles) of rails, 300 animated elements, 60,000 light sources and 300 kilometres (186 miles) of cabling, representing some 120,000 hours of work. Since 2022 the park has been designated one of the Sites Touristiques Emblematiques of the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes Region.

The layout is divided into five themed worlds built in sequence. The three original worlds -- city, mountain and countryside -- opened with the park in 2016. Mini Lyon, a three-module reproduction of Lyon separated by the Saone and the Rhone exactly as the real city is, opened at the end of December 2018 and required more than 1,000 reproduced buildings, 35,000 figures and roughly 50,000 hours of work by a team of 20. A fifth world devoted to the Cote d'Azur -- Marseille, Toulon, Saint-Tropez and Nice -- was added in autumn 2024 and represents a further 120,000 hours of work, supported by the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes Region.

Photography and video are explicitly encouraged by the operator, with one firm restriction: selfie sticks are forbidden because they can damage the miniature scenery. Visitors are also asked not to touch the layouts.

The single most productive decision is to time your shots against the twenty-minute day/night cycle. Night phases give the strongest results in Mini Lyon, where the Fete des Lumieres projections play across the Fourviere basilica, Saint-Jean cathedral and the Part-Dieu towers, and in the city world, where street lighting, the fairground and the illuminated power station come up. Day phases suit the mountain and countryside worlds, where the helicoidal ramp, the canyon viaduct and the long main-line runs read better in even light.

The Cote d'Azur world's HD-screen sea is a moving light source and will need a faster shutter than the static scenery around it. Low, close-to-the-glass angles along the running lines produce more convincing images than overhead shots of whole modules. Ambient light is low throughout the park and tripods are impractical in the aisles, so a fast lens and high ISO are more useful than added equipment.

For a railway modeller, the interest at Mini World Lyon is in the engineering of the running lines rather than the number of figurines. The mountain world is the tallest structure the workshop has built, dominated by a four-metre (13 ft) peak modelled on the relief of the Jura. Swiss-pattern lines climb it on a six-level helicoidal ramp, and a long viaduct carries the track across a modelled canyon -- the kind of continuous-grade helix that is normally hidden behind a backdrop on club layouts and is here left visible.

The countryside world runs the layout's long-haul main lines, linking modelled village halts to an international station and passing an animated nuclear power station. Road traffic across all five worlds uses the FALLER car system, with dozens of vehicles circulating autonomously under the supervision of a visible control centre that also manages the animations. In the Cote d'Azur world the workshop went further: the sea is rendered on high-definition screens across which miniature ships are driven pixel-by-pixel, a technique developed for Mini World by a French engineer based in Los Angeles, and the A8 motorway above the miniature Nice carries dozens of vehicles with no on-board battery or motor.

Mini Lyon is the section that will interest anyone who knows the real city's transport. The Lyon tramway, the metro and the TCL buses are all modelled and all functional. Working with the organisers of the Fete des Lumieres, the builders reproduced the festival's projections onto the Fourviere basilica, Saint-Jean cathedral and the Part-Dieu towers. The Association des Modelistes Ferroviaires du Lyonnais, the regional model railway association, is a partner of the park and points its members to the backstage workshop tour.

The park is entirely indoors, so weather is irrelevant to the visit. The operator's own FAQ states that a minimum of 1 hour 30 minutes is needed and that a visit can easily run to three or four hours; the opening-hours page advises allowing at least two hours. A re-entry stamp lets visitors leave and return the same day, which is useful given the restaurants and cinema in the surrounding Carre de Soie centre.

Every twenty minutes the whole layout runs a lighting cycle from dawn to dusk, driven by wall projections and dedicated spotlights. Vehicles progressively switch on their headlights as the cycle darkens. Because each of the five worlds looks substantially different by day and by night, most visitors end up walking the circuit twice rather than once -- a factor worth building into the time budget.

A printed guide handed out at the entrance turns the visit into a Where's Wally-style hunt for dozens of film, cartoon and pop-culture references hidden in the scenery. The park is busiest during French school holidays and at weekends; the operator notes that strollers are permitted but that some of the narrower viewing aisles are difficult to negotiate with one during those periods. Free wi-fi is available so visitors can download the park's guide application on site.
