Virtual Railfan's cameras sit on the Historic Decatur Union Depot, built by Southern Railway in 1905, a quarter of a mile south of the Tennessee River bridge in Decatur, Alabama. Because the bridge is a bottleneck shared by two Class I railroads, everything running through the area passes the lens.
Virtual Railfan's Decatur cameras are mounted on the Historic Decatur Union Depot, built in 1905 by Southern Railway and standing about a quarter of a mile south of the Tennessee River bridge. Passenger service here ended in 1979, when Amtrak's Floridian was discontinued, and the building became a museum: original tools, restored signage and a model train display, operated by Decatur Parks & Recreation.
The railroad geography is what makes the location worth a camera. Decatur's railroad bridge over the Tennessee River is a bottleneck shared by two Class I railroads, which means every train moving through the area has to funnel past the depot. The operator states plainly that the cameras record all of it, local switching included — several riverfront industries are worked throughout the day.
Most of what runs is intermodal, with a solid share of manifest freight fed by Norfolk Southern's nearby Sheffield Classification Yard. The operator is explicit on one point: there is no Amtrak service at this location today.
What to watch for
Two Class I railroads squeezed over one river bridge means meets, waits and held trains — the interesting operational stuff that a wide-open main line never shows. Intermodal is the staple, with manifest freight off Norfolk Southern's Sheffield Classification Yard close behind. Local switchers work the riverfront industries during the day, so there is movement even between road trains. The depot itself is the other half of the attraction: a 1905 Southern Railway building with restored signage, now a museum. Do not wait for a passenger train — the operator states there is none here since the Floridian ended in 1979.
