About this cam

SouthWest RailCams runs this pan-tilt-zoom camera on the CPKC Heavener Subdivision at Decatur, in the far northwest corner of Arkansas. The operator places it precisely at milepost 217, and gives the neighbouring control points so viewers can follow a train through the territory: Dalby (MP 170.1) at the north end, then Neosho 174.1, McElhany 180.8, Noel 200.7, Dorsey 214.2, the camera at 217, then Gentry 222.5, Siloam Springs 229.3, Watts 236.0, Westville 244.4 and Stilwell 258.2 at the south end. The host is the City of Decatur itself. The operator credits the control-point data to Michael Richmond and notes the defect detector at milepost 218.4, which is within earshot of the camera. The integrated radio feed monitors AAR 010 (160.2600 MHz) and AAR 016 (160.3500 MHz) for the Heavener Sub, so the audio on the stream is railroad radio rather than ambient sound.

What to watch for

This is CPKC's route between Kansas City and the Gulf, so the freight is long and the motive power is a mix of CPKC repaints, legacy Canadian Pacific and inherited Kansas City Southern units. Because the camera is a PTZ, the framing changes: sometimes it holds the main line, sometimes it swings to the siding at Dorsey or Gentry. The detector at milepost 218.4 calls out just north of the camera, which gives you about a minute's warning on a southbound. Several of the listed sidings are over 8,000 feet long, so meets here involve genuinely long trains.
