About this cam

Centennial Station at Olympia-Lacey stands at milepost 32.2 of the BNSF Seattle Subdivision, and the camera looks straight along its platform. The Amtrak Depot Committee — the volunteer non-profit that owns the camera and staffs the station — counts "about 45-55 trains daily" past the lens, fourteen of them Amtrak stops.

Olympia-Lacey Centennial Station sits at milepost 32.2 on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Seattle Subdivision, the spine of the Pacific Northwest passenger corridor. The operator describes the traffic as "BNSF trains operating between Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and Vancouver, Washington", with "trains coming out of Centralia headed north as well as Union Pacific trains operating on trackage rights between Portland, Oregon, and Tacoma, Washington".

What makes this camera unusual is who runs it. In the operator's own words, "This camera is owned and maintained by the Amtrak Depot Committee, a Non-Profit (501c3) organization of volunteers that actually staff the Olympia-Lacey Amtrak station." The committee was formed in 1987 to run a state-centennial fundraising drive that built the station, which opened in May 1993. Volunteers have met every passenger train since — including the late ones.

The station's own site records it as "the fourth busiest passenger train depot in Washington state", hosting "a record 82,519 passengers in 2025". The camera therefore watches a working, publicly staffed platform rather than a lineside pole.

What to watch for

Fourteen Amtrak trains stop here every day — Cascades runs between Vancouver BC and Eugene, plus the Coast Starlight on its Seattle–Los Angeles run. Between them, BNSF freight works the corridor in both directions and Union Pacific trains appear on trackage rights between Portland and Tacoma, so a UP unit on BNSF iron is routine rather than remarkable here.

The operator gives the total as "About 45-55 trains daily can be viewed on the camera feed including 14 Amtrak station stops" — meaning roughly three quarters of what passes is freight. Watch the platform itself as much as the track: volunteers meet each passenger train, so the station comes to life a few minutes before every Amtrak arrival.
