This camera is sponsored by the Roanoke Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) and looks over Norwich Yard in Roanoke, Virginia. In the operator's own words, "this camera is located on the Virginian Main Line at milepost 246.750." The FRA's own grade-crossing inventory confirms the line at this exact point: the nearest crossing, 4 m from the camera's stated map position, is recorded under Norfolk Southern's "WHITETHORNE" subdivision — the modern FRA name for the historic Virginian Railway main line the operator refers to.
The Roanoke Chapter NRHS announced in March 2025 that it was relocating its restoration facility to Norwich, "located in the former Virginia Scrap Iron and Metal property in Norwich" — a site "used as a scrap yard from the 1950s through 2008" — after purchasing "an 16-acre lot near Bridge Street to house its collection of historic railroad equipment." The Virginian Railway, largely electrified west of Roanoke, was absorbed into the Norfolk & Western in 1959; N&W itself merged with Southern Railway in 1986 to form today's Norfolk Southern.
