Museu Nacional Ferroviário

The Museu Nacional Ferroviário (National Railway Museum) is the national railway museum of Portugal, set inside the historic railway complex at Entroncamento — a town that grew up around a major junction of the Portuguese network and is still an important railway hub. Its headquarters occupy roughly 4.5 hectares of former railway land, taking in the old locomotive depot, workshops and some nineteen tracks.

The museum tells the story of more than 160 years of railway history in Portugal, from the first steam locomotives to the rail transport of the future. Its collection numbers around 36,000 objects and is regarded as one of the finest railway heritage collections in Europe, ranging from locomotives, carriages and wagons to station clocks, uniforms, tickets, tariffs and railway art. The main site opened at Entroncamento on 18 May 2007, and the fully renovated museum was inaugurated on 18 May 2015, on International Museum Day.

At the heart of the site is the locomotive roundhouse, built where an earlier building stood until 1976. Its 1911 turntable survives and still works, with fourteen tracks radiating from it; the former Rotunda das Locomotivas is open to visitors and holds a permanent display of steam, diesel and electric locomotives. The museum is run by the Fundação Museu Nacional Ferroviário Armando Ginestal Machado and also operates museological nuclei at Arco de Baúlhe, Bragança, Chaves, Lousado and Macinhata do Vouga.

The locomotive roundhouse is the standout subject: steam, diesel and electric engines arranged in a fan around the historic turntable make a striking wide shot, and the turntable itself is photogenic when in motion. The Royal Train and the D. Luís locomotive reward close-up detail work on their period fittings. Because much of the site is outdoors, clear light in the morning or late afternoon works best; confirm any limits on tripods or flash inside the exhibition halls at reception.

The signature exhibit is the Royal Train (Comboio Real), whose centrepiece is the D. Luís (D. Luiz) locomotive — the oldest steam locomotive in Portugal, built in 1862 by Beyer, Peacock and Company of Manchester. It hauled the royal train assembled for the Portuguese monarchy, which carried Queen Maria Pia of Savoy, King Luís I and the future King Carlos I, and it stayed in service on suburban trains until 1923. The royal saloon carriages displayed alongside it are among the treasures of Portuguese railway heritage.

The collection also preserves the Presidential Train (Comboio Presidencial), an Allan railcar and a broad selection of steam, diesel and electric locomotives gathered in the roundhouse around the working 1911 turntable. For enthusiasts the setting is as much a draw as the exhibits: this is a genuine railway workshop complex beside a station where main-line trains still run, rather than a purpose-built gallery.

The museum leans into that authenticity with hands-on experiences: visitors can pedal a rail quadricycle along the museum tracks and ride the manned model-railway circuit, and a driving simulator lets you take the controls over a real Entroncamento-to-Pombal route.

The museum spreads across a large open railway site, so a visit mixes indoor halls — chiefly the Oficinas do Vapor (Steam Workshops) — with outdoor tracks and the roundhouse. Tickets are valid for the whole day, letting you come and go, and audio guides are offered in six languages (Portuguese, English, Spanish, French, German and Japanese). Plan on roughly two to three hours to take in the main exhibitions and activities.

Facilities include a reception with twenty lockers, a shop, restrooms with baby-changing and accessible facilities, a breastfeeding area and a first-aid kit. Priority entrance is offered to older visitors, pregnant women, disabled visitors and adults accompanying children aged two or younger, and wheelchairs are available on request.

Entroncamento itself is a quiet railway town, so the museum is rarely overcrowded outside school-visit periods and special events; weekends are the liveliest, when the rideable activities usually run.
