About this event

Whistlestop Valley, the steam railway at Clayton West near Huddersfield, runs its Santa Express on selected days before Christmas. The operator invites families to hop aboard a real steam train to visit Santa in his grotto, and the Santa Express adds the Christmas Magic Show with Spike the Elf.

Tickets cover one allocated return journey from Clayton West station to Shelley North Pole on a reserved, timed service, a ride of about 25 minutes. At Shelley North Pole there is a one-to-one meeting with Father Christmas in his grotto with a gift for each child, chosen by the age booked on the ticket. Guests can also make reindeer food, hang a wish on the Wishing Tree, post a letter to Santa at the South Pole Post Office and have a photo taken in the Cosy Cabin. All guests over twelve months receive an edible festive treat.

The operator says visitors are welcome from the morning and advises arriving two to three hours before the train to enjoy the facilities at Clayton West, including the Firebox Café. It also sells a First Class Christmas upgrade with extra leg room, no queuing at the entrance and other extras, and runs a SEND Santa version with reduced capacity and calm carriages as a separate event.
