Sveriges Järnvägsmuseum

Sveriges Järnvägsmuseum is Sweden's national railway museum, occupying a former railway yard at Rälsgatan 1 on the south-eastern edge of Gävle, roughly 2 km (1.2 miles) from Gävle Central. The institution dates to 1915, when the National Railway Board set up a railway museum in Stockholm; a dedicated locomotive hall followed at Tomteboda station in 1942, and the collection moved to the present Gävle site, which opened on 5 June 1970. The grounds cover about 16,000 square metres (172,000 square feet) across two yards laced with track, two locomotive roundhouses and a workshop.

The museum describes its holdings as more than 300 vehicles spanning the mid-nineteenth century to the present, from horse-drawn ore wagons to X2 motorised carriages, in both standard and narrow gauge. Wikipedia's account of the collection breaks that down as over 100 locomotives, some 150 coaches and several hundred further items of rolling stock, alongside hundreds of thousands of photographs, plus tools, instruments, models, crockery, textiles and artwork.

The site closed in 2017 for a renovation expected to take two years and instead ran until the summer of 2024, delayed by a government funding crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. It reopened with entirely new exhibitions, the Ångpannan restaurant and its terrace, a shop, an indoor playroom and an outdoor playground. The museum is today part of the Swedish National Maritime, Transport and Military Museums.

The two locomotive roundhouses and the depot rows inside Tåghallen are the strongest subjects on the property, and the Train Hall is the only place where the depth of the collection reads in a single frame — but it opens in the summer season only, 12:00 to 16:00. Outdoors, Järnvägsparken puts historic railway buildings, a station waiting room and a track tender's cabin in daylight, the easiest light on site; the pair of restored 1940s X5 express units at the new entrance is the other reliable set piece.

The exhibition halls are artificially lit, and the museum publishes no photography restriction on its visitor pages — assume normal museum etiquette and ask at reception about tripods and about any temporary exhibition that may be handled differently. The high-season railbus between the museum, Gävle Central and the Train Hall gives a moving vantage over the yard that you cannot reach on foot.

The headline vehicle is Prins August, a 2-4-0 built in 1856 by Beyer, Peacock and Company of Manchester for the newly opened Southern Main Line (Södra stambanan) and classed B by Statens Järnvägar. Withdrawn from service in 1906 and preserved thereafter, it is described as the world's oldest operating standard-gauge steam locomotive and is still steamed for special occasions. Beside it in the story of Swedish traction sit Fryckstad, Sweden's oldest preserved locomotive, built in 1855, and a replica of John Ericsson's Novelty.

The rolling stock runs well past locomotives. Two fully restored X5 express units from the 1940s stand at the new entrance. The royal group includes King Oscar II's audience carriage, Queen Sophia's carriage and the current royal family's mountain-holiday carriage, acquired in 2001. Also on the roster are the DC1a postal and third-class combination carriage of 1888, the Cronstedt and Sahlin restaurant and bar cars restored for the museum's own train trips, the Y1, Y6 and Y7 railbuses alongside the classic Hilding Carlsson railbuses, and F1200, the locomotive involved in Sweden's most serious railway accident, in 1918.

Most of the fleet lives at the Tåghallen depot rather than in the exhibition halls, and reaching it is itself a ride: during the high season a railbus runs between Gävle Central, the museum and the Train Hall, and the trip is included in the admission ticket.

The museum reopened in the summer of 2024, so the exhibitions, restaurant, shop and playground are all new builds rather than refurbished 1970s displays. Every display caption is in both Swedish and English, and a roughly 15-minute introductory film runs with English subtitles — a rare courtesy among Nordic railway museums and worth the time before you walk the halls.

Driving simulators are the magnet for families, and reviewers report long queues for them on busy days; one visitor described a large crowd waiting at the 11:00 opening, with the car park filling early. The overflow lot at Rälsgatan 3 opens when the museum is busy. Allow two to four hours for the exhibition halls alone; visitors who add the Tåghallen depot report spending most of the day between the two sites.

In summer the Järnvägsparken outdoor area adds historic railway buildings, a station waiting room, a track tender's cabin, a playground and a mini train, and the Train Hall opens from 12:00 to 16:00. Outside the summer season the Train Hall is closed and the site is quieter, the halls noticeably less crowded, and admission drops from SEK 180 to SEK 100.
