Grosmont Station — Platforms 3 & 4

Grosmont is the northern operating hub of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, and the railway watches it with two of the eight cameras it installed for its streaming network. NYMR describes them precisely: "Grosmont Station P3 — From the signal gantry looking over Platforms 3 & 4" and "Grosmont Station P2 — From another signal gantry looking over Platforms 2 & 3." A third NYMR camera, "Grosmont Esk Valley", is lineside rather than on the station, "looking towards Grosmont".

The station has four platforms — one on the national network, three worked by the NYMR — which makes it the point where two railways touch. NYMR calls it "the junction where the heritage railway ends and the main rail network begins, connecting both Middlesbrough and Whitby to the NYMR with the Esk Valley Line." Beyond the platforms, through what NYMR names "the George Stephenson tunnel built in 1835", stand the engine sheds "where our steam and diesel locomotives are maintained and restored".

The line's own account of itself starts earlier still: a "George Stephenson survey report produced" in 1832, the "Whitby & Pickering Railway Bill" receiving Royal Assent in 1833, services from Whitby to Grosmont in 1835 and on to Pickering in 1836. The York & North Midland Railway took it over in 1845; "1854: Amalgamation to create the North Eastern Railway receives royal assent" — so the ex-North Eastern Railway lineage is confirmed at the operator's own source, by way of the Whitby & Pickering. Passenger service between Malton and Whitby ended in 1965; preservation services began in 1973, opened by the Duchess of Kent, and the first through Whitby–Pickering train in preservation ran in 1987.

The cameras carry sound as well as pictures — NYMR advertises "up to 8 high-quality video and audio streaming cameras" — and access is by a £1.99/month YouTube Membership that the charity (registered number 501388) states goes toward "Supporting our volunteer-led heritage operations" and "Maintaining and expanding the camera network".
