Goathland Bank — North Yorkshire Moors Railway

The climb between Grosmont and Goathland has a ruling gradient of 1 in 49 — steep enough that, as the operator puts it, this is where "the locomotives [work] up the 1 in 49 bank." It replaces an older and steeper route: the original 1836 Whitby and Pickering Railway, engineered under George Stephenson, hauled wagons over this stretch of moor on a rope-worked incline at Beck Hole. Steam locomotives could not climb that incline under their own power, so the North Eastern Railway built the current deviation line, opened in 1865, giving trains a continuous grade to climb instead of a cable winch. The 1836 alignment survives today as the Rail Trail, a 3.5-mile footpath between Goathland and Grosmont that the railway's own Goathland station page points visitors towards.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway runs steam and heritage diesel services over this section as part of its line between Pickering and Whitby. The operator streams nine lineside and station cameras in total, but keeps only this one — Goathland Bank — free to watch: the other eight, including the nearby Darnholm Bridge and Goathland Station cameras, require a paid YouTube channel membership. In the operator's own words: "The popular Goathland Bank camera remains free to view, so everyone can continue to enjoy the locomotives working up the 1 in 49 bank."
