Virtual Railfan's Johnstown cameras are hosted by the Johnstown Area Heritage Association in partnership with Vision Together 2025, at milepost 275 on Norfolk Southern's Pittsburgh Line — the former Pennsylvania Railroad main line over the Alleghenies. The operator counts roughly 40 trains a day here. Amtrak's Pennsylvanian passes twice daily and actually stops, at the historic Johnstown station (station code JST), so this is one of the few Virtual Railfan locations where you watch a passenger train board rather than merely pass. Two cameras are published: a public static camera holding a fixed vantage of the main line, and a members-only pan-tilt-zoom camera offering sweeping views towards Pittsburgh. Three channels are monitored — Norfolk Southern Road on 160.800 (AAR 46), the Allegheny dispatcher on 160.485 (AAR 24), and Amtrak Road on 160.920 (AAR 54) — and the operator links three separate radio feeds covering Altoona, the Allegheny dispatcher and the Cresson west slope.
What to watch for
This is the Pittsburgh Line, so what passes is the full weight of Norfolk Southern's Allegheny crossing: intermodal, manifest, coal, and helper sets. Johnstown sits below the west slope, and the Allegheny dispatcher channel tells you what is working the grade above. Amtrak's Pennsylvanian stops twice a day at the 1916-era station. The Johnstown Area Heritage Association hosts the cameras, and the town's flood history is inseparable from the railroad that runs through it.
