Virtual Railfan's Paradise camera, hosted by the Strasburg Rail Road Company, overlooks Leaman Place Junction in Lancaster County — the point where the oldest short line railroad in America meets Amtrak's Keystone Corridor and Norfolk Southern locals.
That combination is what makes the location unusual. Strasburg's steam-powered excursions, hauled by locomotives 89, 90 and 475 — with visits from Thomas and Percy for the family events — cross paths with Amtrak's Keystone Service, which runs between Harrisburg and Philadelphia with most trains continuing to New York City. The operator gives the speeds: up to 125 mph on the Northeast Corridor and 110 mph on the Keystone Corridor.
Three channels are monitored: Amtrak Road on 160.800 (AAR 46), Norfolk Southern Road for the Harrisburg Line on 161.070 (AAR 64), and the Strasburg Rail Road's own road channel on 161.235 (AAR 75). A second pan-tilt-zoom camera covers Strasburg itself.
What to watch for
Steam and modern electric traction in the same frame is a genuinely rare sight, and it is the whole reason for this camera. Strasburg locomotives 89, 90 and 475 work the excursion service; Amtrak Keystone Service trains run fast between Harrisburg and Philadelphia; Norfolk Southern locals work the Harrisburg Line. Listening on the Strasburg road channel (161.235) tells you when an excursion is about to come down to the junction. Family-event days bring Thomas and Percy, which changes the character of the traffic entirely.
