About this cam
Railcam UK's camera at Townsend Fold, a gated level crossing with its own signal box on the East Lancashire Railway, a short distance south of Rawtenstall.
Townsend Fold is a gated level crossing where Holme Lane crosses the East Lancashire Railway just south of Rawtenstall, on the Irwell valley heritage line between Ramsbottom and the railway's northern terminus. Its signal box still works the gates by hand, and the site sits close to Bury Road, with the Irwell Valley trail running alongside for photography in both directions.
In January 2022 the East Lancashire Railway relaid roughly 300 yards (fifteen panels) of track immediately north of the Townsend Fold crossing as part of its ongoing track-renewal programme.
What to watch for
Trains crossing the Holme Lane gates at Townsend Fold on the final approach to Rawtenstall, worked by the crossing's own signal box; the East Lancashire Railway relaid about 300 yards of track just north of here in January 2022.
