Severn Valley Railway — ex-GWR Bewdley to Kidderminster loop line
- Best viewing times
- The SVR's published 2026 Timetable B (14 February to 18 October) shows five trains each way calling at Bewdley, the first northbound departure at 10:30 and the last southbound at 17:17 — so the useful window on an operating day runs from about 10:00 to 17:30 UK time. Timetable C, the main-season pattern, runs from 28 March to 1 November. Outside those hours the platform is normally still.
- Through the seasons
- The Severn Valley Railway does not run every day: its 2026 season is built on published timetable letters, with Timetable B dated 14 February to 18 October and Timetable C dated 28 March to 1 November, plus a separate Festive Season Service. On non-operating days the camera shows an empty station. Note a live restriction read on the SVR homepage on 19 August 2026: "Due to increased risk of lineside fires, all trains will be hauled by one of our Heritage Diesel fleet until at least the end of August" — during that period the August roster lists D9551, D1015, D1062, 50049, 20048, D821 and 46045, and no steam will pass the camera.

About this cam
One of six cameras the Severn Valley Railway streams from its own YouTube channel, Bewdley North looks up the platform towards Bridgnorth at the heritage line's three-platform junction station in Worcestershire. Trains arriving in shot have just come down from Arley, over the ex-GWR Severn Valley line of 1862.
Bewdley is the middle station of the Severn Valley Railway, the 16-mile heritage line the SVR describes as "running through 16-miles of beautiful Worcestershire and Shropshire countryside" between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth. The railway itself opened in 1862 — "after a nine-year building project", originally part of the longer Shrewsbury to Hartlebury line — and the section that reaches Bewdley from the south is pure Great Western: "The Bewdley to Kidderminster section, or loop line, was constructed by the GWR, who ran many of the railways in the area, and opened in June 1878." British Railways closed the line to passengers in 1963; preservation began in a pub in 1965, and on 1 February 1966 BR agreed to sell the line for £25,000.
Bewdley has three platforms and was once a double junction, for the Wyre Forest and Stourport branches, both now reduced to sidings. It is still worked mechanically by two signal boxes, Bewdley South and Bewdley North, whose construction the GWR board authorised in October 1877 to prepare for the Kidderminster loop; Bewdley North still has the 37-lever GWR 3-bar horizontal tappet frame that replaced its McKenzie and Holland frame on 25 June 1908, and it hands trains on to Arley and Highley by electric train token. The station itself keeps a heritage-covered wooden footbridge and an open-roofed cast-iron gents' urinal on platforms 2 and 3, relocated from Melrose in Scotland and reinstalled by volunteers.
The camera is one of six the Severn Valley Railway launched with Railcam in April 2021 and publishes on its own webcams page. Railcam UK Ltd chose the positions and fitted the microphones; the railway hosts the streams on its own YouTube channel and shows them free of charge. The SVR's duty officers use them operationally — Senior Duty Officer Dave Brattan said the cameras "will significantly improve the way the duty officer will be able to manage the day-to-day running of the train service and improve how we deal with any delays".
The view has survived worse than a quiet afternoon. On the evening of Tuesday 19 June 2007 a storm broke the line in 45 separate places between Bridgnorth and Northwood Halt, just north of here; repairs cost around £3.7m, funded by roughly £1.9m of grants, about £1.0m of insurance and a public appeal, and the whole railway reopened on 21 March 2008.
What to watch for
Arrivals from the north are the point of this camera: trains drop down from Arley and Northwood Halt and run into Bewdley's platforms, so you see the approach rather than just the departure. On a Timetable B day the SVR runs five trains each way through Bewdley, so expect a movement roughly every hour and a half between mid-morning and early evening, plus shunts and loco movements between them. Motive power is drawn from a large resident fleet: GWR saddle tank 813, GWR panniers 7714 and 1501, GWR 4930 Hagley Hall, 7812 Erlestoke Manor and 7802 Bradley Manor, LMS Ivatt 43106, BR Standards 75069 and 82045, and Bulleid Light Pacific 34027 Taw Valley. The heritage diesel fleet is unusually strong for a preserved line and works turns in its own right — Class 52 'Westerns' D1015 Western Champion and D1062 Western Courier, Class 42 D821 Greyhound, Class 50s 50035 Ark Royal, 50049 Defiance and 50007 Hercules, Class 40 40106 Atlantic Conveyor and Class 14 'Teddy Bear' D9551. Some services are worked by the SVR's DMU railcar. Signalling is still mechanical here: watch for semaphore arms coming off and the token exchange for the single-line section towards Arley, worked from Bewdley North box.
